Motivational Monday: The key to happiness

MM: gratitude

Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously.  And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Happiness is defined as a state of well-being and contentment or a pleasurable and satisfying experience.  In general as human beings we always seem to be searching for happiness.  What can provide that sense of joy and well-being that lasts?  How can we be content with our lives and feel full?

After feeling unbelievably happy & content living abroad, the past few weeks have presented challenges, which resulted in some reading & reflection on what had changed.  From experience, “stuff” does nothing to bring happiness, we literally only bought food for ourselves for a  year and neither of us feel like we missed much, so stuff doesn’t bring continued happiness.

How about living your dream?  Well, without a doubt there is something magical about living  something you just had on a dream board for years.  But there is something more…gratitude.

While abroad, every day we woke up, every walk we took, every site we saw, every person we met, we were deeply thankful for.  Mostly because both of us would literally be in shock that we were spending days walking the Champs-Élysées, as if it were a regular Monday afternoon!

It is more challenging to remember gratitude in our day-to-day lives and to experience the magic of living.  It is in the every-day that we are challenged to dig deep, give thanks and find happiness.

Emerson in his quote first talks about giving thanks for good things, most of us can handle that.  Then he continues with, ALL THINGS have contributed to your advancement, to which we should give gratitude.  That becomes more challenging!

We had a wonderful Sunday morning with friends yesterday, where the pastor challenged us that there is no magic button for happiness and  it is not something that happens overnight.  He shared with us happiness and contentment is LEARNED.  Meaning it takes PRACTICE!  It also means gratitude takes commitment.  We must practice it daily to reap the results of sustained happiness.

How can you remind yourself daily to be grateful?  Do you have a gratitude journal?  With the American holiday of THANKS-giving coming up, what can you be grateful for?

Love you all and we are so grateful you read this post & keep up with the blog!
