Motivational Monday: Forgiveness

MM: forgiveness

To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.

– Lewis B Smedes

Do you have someone you need to forgive?  Is there a past situation that is eating away at your peace?  Do you need for forgive yourself?  Maybe it is the time for forgiveness.  Time to set yourself free.

I think sometimes the challenge is thinking once we forgive someone, they have to be our best friend again.  That is not true at all.  Forgiving the person, releases that hold they have over your thoughts and your heart.  It releases that anguish internally, so you can move on and live a more full life.  This is especially true if that person has been abusive physically or emotionally.

Most spiritual practices teach us the importance of forgiveness.  Jesus teaches us the importance of forgiveness and even incorporates it in our daily prayer….forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  By forgiving others, we also forgive ourselves.

One of our yoga teachers gave us a method he used based off techniques from Louise Hay.  When there is someone you need to forgive you repeat:

I forgive __(person’s name)__ for not being who I wanted them to be.  I forgive them and I release them.

In the Louise Hay method you would repeat this hundreds of times a day until you have moved on from the situation, you felt forgiveness and/or the person no longer had a hold over your life.

Lewis B Smedes puts it this way, “Use the gift (forgiveness) as often as it takes to set you free from a miserable past you cannot shake.”

Both teachers make a point that you have to keep forgiving until you are set free.  It is not a one time occurrence, it is continual, over and over again, until you have peace.

I have to be honest after my quiet meditation this morning, I randomly picked this quote, asking that it be something that would help someone that is reading the blog today.  I was surprised by the quote and after some personal reflection, I have a smile on my face because I totally needed this lesson too.  I hope it helps someone out there struggling with peace and forgiveness as well!
