Motivational Monday: Contentment

MM: Contentment

‘He who is contented is rich.’ ~Lao Tzu

I recently read The Little Book of Contentment by Leo Babauta.  It is a free download and available to everyone.  I downloaded the book to our Kindle because I feel liking finding contentment has been a challenge for me at certain times in my life.  Thankfully, this year I have felt more content and happier than I have in a long time, possibly ever.  Ironically, I have had less “things” and very limited money, but have found incredible happiness.

Some of the big take away messages for me from the book were:

  1. AWARENESS of when you are comparing yourself to others or judging yourself harshly.
  2. APPRECIATION of everything you do have.  Being grateful for everything in life, including the basics we take for granted everyday- like having clean water.
  3. LET IT GO!  By comparing yourself to others you are only hurting yourself.  You can let go of it all and be happy with ourself.
  4. LOVE YOURSELF because you are uniquely you.  This is the beauty of life, we are all different.  So love yourself!

I think one of the reasons that Jon and I love Italy so much, is the sense of happiness and contentment that people seem to have.  It is not about the flashy cars or things, it is about meeting family & friends in the piazza and enjoying life.

Are you happy and content?  If not, I suggest living out of one carry-on suitcase for a year, you will be amazed how little you need & how happy you become!  I know that is not everyone’s dream or realistic for everyone, but the underlying lesson is realizing how little you need to be happy.  And the less “things” you need, the more time you create for what you really value & treasure, which brings more happiness.

What advice do you have to share about contentment?  Or what has been your personal journey to contentment?
