Montpellier Botanical Garden

botanical gardens

Montpellier is home to the oldest botanical garden in France.  It was created at the request of Henri IV for studying medicinal plants and opened in 1593.  It became the model for botanical gardens in France including the one created in Paris 40 years later.  It started out as one hectare of land to study plants and has grown in to a green park attached to the University of Montpellier.

The admission is free, it is open in the afternoons Tuesday through Sunday.  It is located near Tram lines 1 and 4 at the Place Albert 1er stop.

Being a naturopathic physician we had to check out the oldest botanical garden in France.  It is currently under renovation and in desperate need of some love and weeding, so it is great news they are working on it.  Don’t you just love that medical schools used to study plants….we are going back in that direction (at least some of us are)!
