Italian Hospitality

So we all know about Southern Hospitality, but we are falling in love with Italian Hospitality.  I don’t know if we have ever met so many people for the first time, that are so willing to invite you into their homes and want to fill you up with delicious food!

The apartment we rented in Lake Como was next to Alan & Barbara’s home.  On the day we arrive we were whisked into their cucina for espresso and for our last day in Lake Como they invited us to their back yard for a Bar-B-Q.

One of the most beautiful things about the Italians that we have experienced is, there is no pretense.  What you see, is what you get.  They are completely real, completely themselves.  There are no fancy place settings, there is no fine china or big wine glasses, in other words William-Sonoma would not survive here!  What is most important is serving the highest quality food and enjoying it together…these people understand the essence of life.

We were served up delicious cheeses and of course prosciutto (Which according to the Italians, isn’t meat and is suitable for vegetarians…kinda like lamb for the Greeks!).  Jon manned the grill, while Alan prepared a local polenta dish with sage and butter, that is only found in the Lake Como region.

We even got to enjoy some of Alan’s homemade beer.  It is top notch and similar to Belgian beers.  I kept telling him he should sell it, but he only makes it for his family and the village.  Yes, the American business mind, meets the beauty of Italian life 😉

This was the perfect way for us to end our time in Italy.  Neither of us want to leave this beautiful country.  But enjoying a family meal around a table in the backyard, with new friends, overlooking the mountains and Lake Como, is a pretty nice way to say goodbye for now.
