Hiking Cinque Terre

One of the big things the girls wanted to do was hike Cinque Terre.  I had seen pictures of the hike years before and was envisioning wide open paths with hundreds of people making the hike per day.  Let me tell you, I don’t think anything could have prepared me and Jon for the hike between Levanto & Monterosso!

First off, we have not acclimated to the heat yet.  We have basically been in winter weather for the past 7 months and hiking the crisp cool hills of England is NOTHING like the hot, humid, rocks of Italy!  As beautiful as it sounds, we were all trenched in sweat before we even got out of Levanto!  Once we reached the overlook of Levanto, Jon was ready to turn around convinced it was not going to get any prettier than the views of Levanto (turns out he was pretty accurate)!

Most of the hike was on narrow rocky paths only wide enough for one person.  You had to hug the side of the cliff to allow a person walking in the other direction to pass you.  About half way through the hike, Jon was asking what time it was.  I was praying my girlfriends didn’t tell him we had at least another hour left, if not more!

We did get to one small look out, with beautiful views of the water below.  It was wide enough for one brave person to stick their camera out and catch the view.  Let me tell you how much I wanted to be down at the water and not up at the top!

Praise God, we finally made it to the top after 2 hours!  A nice Canadian lady took our picture.  The first one she took, we all look exhausted, so the lady made us take another one…

We made it!

We made it!

After the picture Jon practically ran down all the stairs to get to Monterosso…and it was not enthusiasm that was pushing him on!  I think this hike is going to take at least 8-10 years for Jon to “forget” before we do any hiking again.  Guess this means we are just going to have to dig our toes into the sand & enjoy a fruity umbrella drink, while watching the waves roll in…ahhh darn!
