Masseria Triticum

triticum masseria

A masseria in Italy used to be a self-sufficient compound or country house with a few families.  Everything they needed they made themselves from the land surrounding the masseria.  Today masserias have become more farm like, with some selling food, renting rooms or running small restaurants.

On Sunday we went to Masseria Triticum in Francovilla.  It has been beautifully restored and is a working farm and restaurant.  Everything you eat in the restaurant comes from their farm.  We had a traditional Italian meal, starting with antipasto, then a pasta course, followed by the main course and completed with dessert.  It was an unbelievable amount of food, but it was delicious!

One thing we loved was being surrounded by Italian families out for their Sunday meal.  There were long tables for large families with multiple generations.  The kids were well behaved and when there attention span shortened their was a playroom off the dining room for them.  But even then, their was no yelling, no screaming.  It was an interesting comparison to some US family restaurants we have been to!

After lunch we went on a tour of the farm and surrounding vineyard.

Thank you to our hosts, Keith and Cathy, for a wonderful afternoon and a true Italian experience!
