Foods of Cisternino

Cisternino feature

We ventured out in the rain the other night to get a quick glimpse of Cisternino.  Cisternino is a small town in Puglia that is known for its meat production.  There are butcher shops scattered throughout the town that also become restaurants.  You can order the type of meat that you want and the butcher will also cook it for you in his shop.

One of Cisternino’s most famous meat dishes is the bombette, which is pork or veal cutlet rolled up with mozzarella cheese inside.

The favorite part of our adventure to Cisternino was the wine shop.  There were huge 500 Liter tanks of wine, with gas shaped handles coming off the vats.  You bring in a 5 Liter jug (or any bottle/jug size of your choice) and they filled it directly from the tank for you, for a whopping 5-8 Euros!  You should have seen Jon’s eyes light up when we walked in the store.  You could see his mind working full speed ahead, wondering how he could run this type of operation!

We hope to go back when it is nicer out and have a leisurely stroll around Cisternino.
