Chateau La Merienne

chateau Merienne

This beautiful chateau in Cavaliere was our home along the French Riviera for three weeks.  We were surrounded by yellow blooms of mimosa trees, that had a slight honey smell when in full bloom.  When the wind was blowing just right you could hear the waves of the Mediterranean Sea crashing against the shore.  The Mistral winds provided us with blue skies that looked so fake, it was as if you colored them with the brightest blue paint.  The beach was only 900 meters from the chateau and was the perfect romantic spot to end the day with the sky turning brilliant shades of violet, salmon pink and coral.  Of eight bedrooms in the chateau, all with beautiful modern decoration, we had the terrace level en-suite bathroom, with a king sized bed that was more comfortable than our bed at home.  In other words we were completely spoiled.

Believe it or not, the chateau was not the best part.   The best part was the sense of family that evolved from our time at Chateau Merienne.  Gail and Meyrick the owners of the chateau, created the feeling of family by fixing amazing gourmet meals everyday for us to enjoy around an enormous dinner table.  Some evenings, we would sit around the dinner table for hours, talking, joking, philosophising.  If you have been to dinner at my parent’s house, you know evenings like these make me feel right at home.

Spending 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, together also results in becoming close friends at a much faster pace then would normally allow.  We met all types of amazing people during our time there.  David and Jon became fast friends, working together on the grounds and clearing land.  David was the young philosopher of the group and really gave both of us hope for the next generation.  Typically the Millennial Generation or Gen Y get a bad rap, but the concern for the world and the profound thoughts of such a young person are amazing.  We know David, and his generation, will change the world.

In regards to belief, that is the anthem song for Gail & Meyrick, “Don’t Stop Believe’n.”  They are true visionaries.  They are in the process of making 8 buildings surrounding the chateau into an artists’ retreat.  The retreat is something they both believe in, to the core of their being.  We wish nothing but the best to both of them in their journey of making it possible.  In order to get funding for the retreat, they rent out Chateau Merienne during the summer months, if any of you high-rollers out there want to rent a gorgeous chateau along the French Riviera, knowing the money is going to a greater cause, please consider Chateau Merienne.  And just to get an idea of how visionary they are, below is one of the buildings they can visualize as a beautiful building for artists.  The land and buildings used to be for children with tuberculosis, that were sent by surrounding provinces or countries, to breath in fresh sea air.  When walking around the grounds you can literally feel the energy left by the children.  It is a happy feeling of great memories by the sea and the land aches to be loved again.  We pray everything falls together for this marvelous plan.

If you want to volunteer in the French Riviera and help with the project, there is tons of work to be done.  We worked hard, but we also played hard, and hopefully made friendships that will last a lifetime.
